The important things about this boot are the things you cannot see. The upper, the "foot part" is made from neck leather - it has a small pebbled grain, but is the toughest, most durable leather on a hide. The shaft, the "leg part" is made from back hide, and stands upright without needing shaft forms, even after having neatsfoot oil applied to make it more supple. The shock absorber is not a gimmick. I weigh 200lbs and it's just right: some give but not squishy. The sole inserts are comfortable and replaceable. The toe box has good room. I hesitated to buy this boot because it is somewhat expensive, but I got my money's worth. With a little care, I expect these will out wear any two other pairs of cheaper boots, so they will be less expensive in the long haul. For me, Ariat's run 1 size larger than an equivalent sneaker.
